Recording and storage
Video is recorded to a network video recorder (NVR), a dedicated server, the cloud, or a hybrid of on-site and cloud. The recorder runs continuously, and how it is configured determines image quality, frame rate, and how many days of footage the system holds before it overwrites the oldest video. Storage is sized from a calculation, not a guess: camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, and retention days together set how much disk the system needs.
The software layer
Video management software (VMS) is the platform a user interacts with. It handles live monitoring, recorded playback, search, user permissions, health monitoring, and integration with other systems. On a small system the VMS may run on the recorder itself. On a larger or multi-building system it runs on a server and manages every location from one interface. The VMS is also where video surveillance connects to access control, so a door alarm can pull up the camera covering that door automatically.
Analytics
Current commercial cameras run analytics on the device. The camera itself can classify objects as people or vehicles, detect line crossing, flag loitering, count people, or read license plates. This reduces false alarms, because the system reacts to a person entering a restricted area rather than to a shadow or a branch. And it makes recorded video searchable, so an investigator can search hours of footage for a red vehicle or a person in a specific zone instead of scrubbing through it manually.
Camera types and where each one fits
There is no single best camera. Each form factor and sensor type solves a specific problem, and a real system mixes several. The common commercial options:
Fixed dome cameras are the default for interior coverage: lobbies, corridors, retail floors, and offices. The dome housing is discreet, resists tampering, and conceals which direction the camera is pointed.
Bullet cameras are visible by design and are used outdoors and at entrances where a visible camera adds deterrence. They are straightforward to aim and usually carry longer-range infrared illumination for night coverage.
Turret cameras have become common indoors and out because they avoid the internal reflection problems domes can have at night and are easy to aim precisely.
Pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras move and zoom, controlled by an operator or programmed to follow analytics. They cover large open areas like parking lots and yards, but a PTZ only sees where it is pointed, so it is paired with fixed cameras rather than used alone. Multisensor and panoramic cameras put multiple imagers or a single wide sensor in one housing to cover a wide area, like a building corner or a large open floor, from one mounting point. They reduce camera count and cabling in spaces that would otherwise need several fixed cameras.
License plate recognition (LPR) cameras are purpose-built for vehicle entrances and parking. They are tuned for the speed, angle, and lighting of moving vehicles and read plates reliably where a general-purpose camera would not.
Thermal cameras detect heat rather than light. They are used for perimeter detection in total darkness and across large outdoor areas, common on industrial sites, utilities, and secured campuses.
Resolution is part of the choice but not the whole of it. A 2-megapixel (1080p) camera is enough for many interior scenes, while 4MP, 5MP, and 8MP (4K) cameras give more detail and more usable digital zoom on a recorded image. Higher resolution produces more data, so it costs more in network bandwidth and storage. The right resolution is set by the scene and what you need to prove from it, not by the highest number on the spec sheet. Video management software: the platform that runs the system
The VMS is the part of the system a facility lives with every day, and the platform choice affects both daily use and long-term cost. Two systems with identical cameras can be very different to operate depending on the software running them.

Second, licensing model: most commercial VMS platforms license per camera, and some add annual support or subscription costs. How video gets stored, and how long to keep it
Storage and retention are set by a calculation, and getting it wrong is the most common reason a system fails when it is needed. Retention is how many days of footage the system holds before overwriting the oldest video. The amount of storage required is driven by camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, and the number of retention days.
Compression has a large effect. H.265 (HEVC) cuts the data rate of a video stream by roughly half compared to the older H.264 standard at similar quality, which directly doubles how many days the same disk can hold. Most current commercial cameras support H.265. Frame rate matters too: most surveillance does not need 30 frames per second, and recording at a lower rate or using motion-based recording stretches storage substantially while keeping usable footage of anything that moves.
Where the video lives is a separate decision. On-site recording (an NVR or server) keeps footage in the building and gives fast local access. Cloud recording removes on-site hardware and keeps video off-site, which protects it if the building hardware is stolen or damaged, at the cost of ongoing subscription and network bandwidth. A hybrid approach records locally and replicates important footage to the cloud, which many commercial facilities choose for the balance of speed and resilience. On-site storage usually uses RAID so a single drive failure does not lose recorded video.
How long to keep footage depends on why you are keeping it. What to look for when buying a commercial video surveillance system

Coverage and placement
Coverage and placement come first. The question is not how many cameras, but what each camera needs to see and prove. Entrances, exits, points of sale, loading docks, parking, and any high-value or high-liability area drive placement. Resolution and lens matched to the scene
A wide lobby and a single doorway need different cameras. The goal is enough detail to identify a person or read a plate at the distance that matters in that scene, which is a function of resolution, lens, and field of view together, not megapixels alone.
Low-light and wide dynamic range
Low-light and wide dynamic range performance decide whether the system works at night and against backlight. Most incidents that matter happen in poor lighting. Cameras with larger sensors, infrared illumination, and wide dynamic range hold up where a basic camera produces a dark or washed-out image.
Network and power capacity

Look for cameras with current firmware support, the ability to enforce strong credentials, and network segmentation that isolates the camera network. Scalability and total cost of ownership
The right system handles the cameras you will add in three years, not only the ones you need today. And the real cost includes VMS licensing, storage, and ongoing maintenance, not just the install price. How to evaluate the integrator, not just the cameras
